Indium arsenide nanowires were synthesized with an intermixing of wurtzite and zincblende structure by chemical beam epitaxy with the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. Resonant Raman spectroscopy of the transverse optical phonon mode at 215cm -1 reveals an E 1 gap of 2.47 eV which is assigned to the electronic band gap at the A point in the indium arsenide wurtzite phase. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.1399473474 Int. Adjusting the cover crop to the agricultural system is essential to reach success during a crop introduction, since this management can influence development, productivity and produced seeds quality. For the soybean cultivar CD 202, traditional, half, and double amounts of crop waste produced by black oats, and a consortium of black oat, common vetch and forage turnip, were evaluated. Tests comprised emergence (emergency speed index (ESI) and emergence rate (ER)), development, field productivity and quality of seeds (germination percentage, accelerated aging, purity, 100-seed weight, and water content). The experimental design was of split plots and the mean values were compared through the Scott-Knott test at a 5% significance level, totaling seven treatments with five replications each. No differences were found in germination percentage, water content, and final height of plants. Some treatments differed in germination and waste use increased ESI; ER was superior for black oats and the best productivity was found under double amount of straw, on both cover crops. The seed strength decreased the under consortium, as shown by accelerated aging under the consortium. The purity of seeds was lower for black oats, decreasing with the least amount of crop waste. The 100-seed weight was lower with the double amount in oats; however, under the consortium the use of cover crop increased their weight. Thus, these species can be a good alternatives for soybean rotation on winter.384292297Bortolini, M.F., Fortes, M.T., Efeitos alelopáticos sobre a germinação de sementes de soja (Glycine max L. A scientific survey on 1550 cases of oral lesions diagnosed in a Brazilian referral center

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to perform an epidemiological survey on the prevalence rate of oral lesions diagnosed in a referral center in Brazil and to establish association between the lesions and the age and gender of the affected patients. This analytical observational study analyzed 3521 medical records of anatomopathological exams of the Pathological Anatomy and Cytopathology Laboratory of the Cancer Hospital of the state of Mato Grosso (Brazil), from December 2011 to September 2015. A total of 1550 relevant medical records was detected. Patients aging between 41 and 60 consisted of 42.84% of the sample. Males were more affected than females (60.13%). Inflammatory processess consisted of the most prevalent diagnosis (43.29%), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (6.06%), and periapical granuloma (5.23%). Oral health public policies must give major attention to Brazilian males aged between the fourth and sixth decades of life in order to improve their quality of life

What can be considered fair marketing in the fashion industry?: Building a green and fair consumer rating scheme for garment brands

The object of this paper is to tackle the issues that are linked to the unsustainability of today’s garment industry. The externalities that arise from this industry –that are known to harm the environment and its inhabitants– are largely talked about today. Whether it be by society, non-governmental organisations, regulatory bodies or companies involved in these destructive practices. Even though a lot is being said on the matter, and that a lot of work is in progress, not many actions to resolve the issues have yet been established. However it may seem, the amount of actions companies claim to be operating, to tackle these issues, are not always as valuable as they appear to be. This is the main issue that is covered throughout this thesis. “What can be considered fair marketing in the fashion industry?”. By coming up with a way of determining the true purpose of a garment brand’s practices, anyone may now challenge the beliefs they have towards a company. The tool discloses a company’s true engagement towards more sustainable operations and is able to establish whether companies are as trustworthy as they claim to be or whether they are misleading the public. Results have shown the reliability of the tool and considerable suggestions have been expressed for the development of the solution. Providing a digital prototype of the created tool would be a meaningful way of promoting it. This is a solution that could, imaginably, become a mobile application, accessible to consumers all around the world. This tool is considered as a helping hand to raise people’s awareness on the true nature of brands. It is also suggested that giving an opportunity to consumers to raise their own awareness might be a good way to promote change. Endorsing third-party’s points of view is a good start, but reaching their own reasoning and feeling about a matter can be even more valuable

Green manure in coffee systems in the region of Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais: characteristics and kinetics of carbon and nitrogen mineralization.

    Get PDF
The use of green manure may contribute to reduce soil erosion and increase the soil organic matter content and N availability in coffee plantations in the Zona da Mata, State of Minas Gerais, in Southeastern Brazil. The potential of four legumes (A. pintoi, C. mucunoides, S. aterrimum and S. guianensis)to produce above-ground biomass, accumulate nutrients and mineralize N was studied in two coffee plantations of subsistence farmers under different climate conditions. The biomass production of C. mucunoides was influenced by the shade of the coffee plantation.C. mucunoides tended to mineralize more N than the other legumes due to the low polyphenol content and polyphenol/N ratio. In the first year, the crop establishment of A. pintoi in the area took longer than of the other legumes, resulting in lower biomass production and N2 fixation. In the long term, cellulose was the main factor controlling N mineralization. The biochemical characteristics, nutrient accumulation and biomass production of the legumes were greatly influenced by the altitude and position of the area relative to the sun
